چکیده

A new finite element level set method is developed to simulate the interface motion. The normal velocity of the moving interface can depend on both the local geometry, such as the curvature, and the external force such as that due to the flux from both sides of the interface of a material whose concentration is governed by a diffusion equation. The key idea of the method is to use an interface-fitted finite element mesh. Such an approximation of the interface allows an accurate calculation of the solution to the diffusion equation. The interface-fitted mesh is constructed from a base mesh, a uniform finite element mesh, at each time step to explicitly locate the interface and separate regions defined by the interface. Several new level set techniques are developed in the framework of finite element methods. These include a simple finite element method for approximating the curvature, a new method for the extension of normal velocity, and a finite element least-squares method for the reinitialization of level set functions. Application of the method to the classical solidification problem captures the dendrites. The method is also applied to the the molecular solvation to determine optimal solute-solvent interfaces of solvation systems.

Modeling of Microstructure Evolution in the Solidification of Multi-component Alloys Using Level Set Methods

A level set method combining features of front tracking methods and fixed domain methods is presented to model microstructure evolution in the solidification of multi-component multiphase alloy systems. Phase boundaries are explicitly tracked by solving the multi-phase level set equations. Diffused interfaces are constructed by extending a small width in both directions from these explicitly tr...

Modelling dendritic solidification with melt convection using the extended finite element method

Dendritic solidification of pure materials from an undercooled melt is studied using the extended finite element method/level set method for modelling the thermal problem and a volume-averaged stabilized finite element formulation for modelling fluid flow. The extended finite element method using evolving enrichment functions allows accurate modelling of the discontinuous thermal conditions at ...

Modeling the growth and interaction of multiple dendrites in solidification using a level set method

A level set method is presented to study the growth and interaction of multiple dendrites in solidification. The method couples thermal and solute diffusion with propagation of multiple interfaces. A single signed distance function is used to track the solid-liquid interface with the aid of markers, the value of which is the orientation angle, for identification of different crystals. The probl...

Modified Fixed Grid Finite Element Method to Solve 3D Elasticity Problems of Functionally Graded Materials

In the present paper, applicability of the modified fixed grid finite element method in solution of three dimensional elasticity problems of functionally graded materials is investigated. In the non-boundary-fitted meshes, the elements are not conforming to the domain boundaries and the boundary nodes which are used in the traditional finite element method for the application of boundary condit...

EVALUATION OF PRESSURE EFFECT ON HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT AT THE METAL- MOLD INTERFACE FOR CASTING OF A356 AL ALLOY

Abstract: During solidification and casting in metallic molds, the heat flow is controlled by the thermal resistance at the casting-mold interface. Thus heat transfer coefficient at the metal- mold interface has a predominant effect on the rate of heat transfer. In some processes such as low pressure and die-casting, the effect of pressure on molten metal will affect the rate of heat transfer a...
